‘Leaves of Grass’
Oil on canvas, signed, dated ’68. Titled and signed and titled again by Richards on label verso. Also Marlborough Fine Art label with painting details. Catalogue No. 12.
Note: probably named after Walt Whitman’s poetry collection of the same name. Illustrated on page 17 of the October 1970 Marlborough catalogue to accompany the gallery’s Ceri Richards solo exhibition, where indeed given exhibition number 12.
Provenance: ex-collection of Dr John Birch, who purchased it at Christies in 1997. A mixed media study for the painting was offered at Sotheby’s in 1987.
