Artist Biography

1925-2015

Eva Aeppli was born in Zolfingen, Switzerland and attended Basel School of Art. She moved to France in 1952 with her second husband sculptor Jean Tinguely and they shared a studio in Paris becoming prominent members of the avant-garde movement there. Aeppli painted and drew but also began sculpting figures in textiles and bronze. Her figures, powerful and disturbing, combined surrealist imagery and expressionist horror. She exhibited widely including in joint shows with Tinguely and in 2022 Aeppli was the subject of a major retrospective at the Centre Pompidou in Metz, France.
