Artist Biography

1897-1961

Istvan Beothy was born in Heves, Hungary. After studying architecture he met Moholy-Nagy and under his influence turned to sculpture which he studied at the Academy of Fine Art, Budapest from 1920-24. He settled in Paris in 1925, taking the name Etienne. In 1932 he was a founding member of the Abstraction-Creation Association, in 1946 vice president of the Salon des Realities Nouvelles and in 1951 a member of Groupe Espace. From 1929 his work, both in sculpture and painting, was Constructivist, fiercely abstract and based upon geometrical formulae.
