Provenance: sold by Marie-Louise Parker, daughter of Louis Osman. It had been hanging in her home at Harpton Court in the Welsh Marches. Osman, an architect and goldsmith responsible for the investiture crown made for the Prince of Wales in 1969, was a good friend of Avray Wilson’s and commissioned him to paint this as a backdrop for a dance performance of “El Amor Brujo” by Marie-Louise and her then partner Javier Iglesias at The Carpenter’s Hall as part of the inaugural The City of London Music Festival in July 1962. “El Amor Brujo” (Ritual Dance), or “Love the Magician”, is a one-act ballet pantominico of Spanish gypsy dance and music composed in the 1920s by Manuel de Falla. Picasso painted the original backdrop, Diaghelev sorting the dance. John Lanchbery was the conductor at this performance.
